Retaining structures
This type of retaining wall is used to retain deep temporary excavations, especially for foundation pits. The soldier piles, made of steel beams or piles (IPE300 – 400, HEB or doubled IPE), are vertically drilled or driven into the ground.
(Our company designs drilled piles put into holes of diameter 620 or 900 mm.) Timber lagging or reinforced and drained shot-crete is applied between the soldier steel piles to retain the soil.
We design the „Berlin wall“ cantilevered, anchored or strutted, according to the conditions at each building site (the geological conditions, the excavation depth, possibilities of anchoring to the neighbourhood, the investor’s requirements, etc.).
Soldier piles with lagging can be used as one side formwork for the basement construction.
„Berlin wall“ is cheap and fast option to retain deep excavations, when the groundwater level is below the excavation depth.
Soldier micropile and lagging wall is designed for retaining deep excavation for foundation pits, where the space is tight, in rocky areas, on steep slopes and when there is a requirement to minimize a thickness of the retaining wall.
The micropiles, steel beams or piles made of HEB120 or HEB140, are vertically drilled or driven into the ground. (Our company designs drilled micropiles put into holes of diameter 200 or 250 mm.) Timber lagging or reinforced and drained shot-crete is applied between the soldier steel micropiles to retain the soil.
We design the soldier micropile and lagging walls cantilevered, anchored or strutted, according to the conditions at each building site (the geological conditions, the excavation depth, possibilities of anchoring to the neighbourhood, the investor requirements, etc.).
This type of retaining structure can be designed and executed as either as temporary or permanent wall.
Pile walls retain the earth during excavations for foundation pits or help to stabilize slopes. The pile walls high load bearing capacity in bending helps to minimise deflection during excavation. The capacity can be increased by anchoring or strutting.
Pile walls can be designed as retaining or even structural walls.
Pile retaining walls are made in three options:
1. contiguous (the distance between piles is bigger than their diameter; the spacing is covered/stabilised by reinforced and drained shot-crete),
2. tangent (the distance between piles is equal to their diameter),
3. secant (consists of overlapping piles; used as a cut-off wall; cheaper option than diaphragm wall – structural + retaining function in one).
The suitable type of pile wall will be chosen based on geological conditions, excavation depth and on the investor requirements.
Pile walls can be designed and executed as either as temporary or permanent walls.
